When the throat muscles relax and when the tongue drops in the throat, it blocks the passage way and thus one resorts to snoring. This happens because some substances or habits result in relaxing the throat muscles. Therefore, one should always remember that as long as you take those substances or follow that habit, snoring will occur. But what causes snoring? Following are 6 reasons as to what causes snoring.
1. Gorging, overweight, not exercising: this are the most common cause to what causes snoring. The fat in your throat area can increase if you do not exercise or love gorging on food. Obese people generally have loose muscles, and thus blocking the breathing passage when they lie down to sleep, snoring therefore takes place. When a person has an excessive amount of fat around their neck the chances of snoring are higher. Women tend to snore after menopause and as they grow old the muscle tone tends to wear off and their body fat increases. If you have fat around the neck area, the air passages will get squeezed when you sleep, because of loose muscles. It prevents the movement of air. A proper weight loss and balanced diet will help in lessening your snoring.
2. Smoking: stress has induced a lot of people to smoking and thus it is another cause of what causes smoking. Smoking annoys the throat and nasal cavity and causes inflammation. There are breathing difficulties with the swelling in the throat and nasal cavity. The risk of snoring is higher in the people who smoke a lot. Passive smoking also causes swelling in the throat and nose linings, and therefore increases the dangers of snoring in passive smokers. Similar to alcohol, you can alter the effects by taking the last smoke 4 hours prior to sleeping.
3. Drinking alcohol and taking sleeping pills: Once the alcohol is absorbed by the body the brain signals become slower. This makes the muscles relax extra than when sleeping. This will give your body the time to adjust and come back to the normal state.
4. Sleeping posture: When you sleep on your back the chin, tongue and other fat muscles below the chin will perhaps relax and squeeze the air passage. Therefore, sleeping on your side with a pillow amid your legs will prevent it from happening.
5. Breathing from the mouth: If you breathe from mouth while sleeping, you could possibly snore. That is why you must control your allergies with proper medicines. While breathing through nose, the air flows through the curved passage to the throat and flows in without any disturbance. Once you start breathing through the mouth the airflow will cause the soft tissue in your throat to start vibrating.
6. Allergy: The normal symptoms are nose blockage and sneezing. Investigations have revealed the people with nose blockage were at a greater risk of snoring and other sleep disorders than people without them. Allergies normally cause your nasal passages to be swollen giving you no other choice than to breath with the mouth thus increasing the probability of snoring. Nose blockages and rhinitis are both a great cause for snoring especially when you sleep on your back.
